Motor History

The stern boat propulsion system was a practical innovation for pleasure boats. The system was cost effective it had a lower center of gravity and gave a clean transom for fishing boats and boats used for water sports. It is also the preferred propulsion system for luxury and other cruisers because it is compact and does not take up much space in the boat. After Volvo Stern, many other companies made their own innovation of the stern drive system. Propellers in this system are made of bronze nickel aluminum alloy or aluminum and in the more durable stainless steel. The horsepower is higher and the stern drive boat propulsion is popular among racing boats. Two, three and four blade propellers are available.

Advantages

Boats with the Stern drive propulsion system do not need a rudder and this is their biggest advantage. They can propel the boat in water of every height. They can be used in shallow waters, inland waters and in the open sea with equally effective power. The disadvantage of the system is that the propeller is more exposed to the water and there is greater corrosion. The system is complicated and repairing and maintaining the propulsion system is difficult.
